The Old Corner Store Subiaco
This building was built as a butcher’s shop and residence in 1922. The project had fallen into disrepair, and we were approached by our client to help with her vision to restore the property, reinstating the building as a corner store for her business and expanding the potential of a shop with attached residence.
Our own view is that what exists has value. To replace such a building would require extensive resources in materials and energy.
The overall design strategy was to keep the existing hipped roof and re-use whatever materials and components as possible. New work is identified under a flat roof.
The building now wraps around a north courtyard containing an aromatic garden.
The verandah was re-established to the west and south.
